How Felicia Sees It: I came into the world an Army brat. Moved here, moved there, landing at the corner of trailer park and military housing. I learned how to load a gun, dodge a social worker, and make an exit plan – before I could even drive. My escape came via the doors of a strip joint coined the Peppermint Lounge. It’s there that I met a comic, became a comic, won this and won that. I pounded the road hard, picked up a camera, did beaucoup TV, married my manager, then quit the biz - because more than anything in the whole wide world, I really wanted kids. There were times between baking cupcakes, changing diapers, and daydreams, that I would dress up fancy for Hollywood brunches. Sometimes I would find myself droning on about art, vintage furniture, and the irony of disappointing love. I would even catch myself saying things like, ´´Less is more, clean lines are timeless, and carefully considered materials are always enduring.´´ When in reality, I only liked a an old vintage dresser because my grammie had one on the side porch. Soon enough, I knew, I needed to make another exit plan. Today, I’m a single mom and proud to say - once again - a working, professional stand up comic. 1. Language: English. Edward Van Halen earned his spot in the guitar tone hall of fame with the first note on his debut album in 1978. The guitar work on that album still boggles minds more than 25 years later. The tones that EVH got on that classic record are among the greatest ever, and a huge part of Eddie‘s guitar sound has always been the MXR Phase 90. The Phase 90 contributed to the unbelievable tones on ´´Eruption,” ´´Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” ´´On Fire,” and ´´Atomic Punk,” plus many other timeless Van Halen tracks. Now you can grab a piece of Eddie’s magic with the new MXR EVH 90—a collaboration between Eddie Van Halen and Dunlop Manufacturing that represents a totally redesigned, updated version of the legendary Phase 90. The EVH 90 will give you the same great spacey swirls and hypnotic warbles that made the Phase 90 famous. But the EVH 90 also features the all-new Script switch that lets you instantly toggle between a vintage, ´´Script Logo” phase tone and a more modern, in-your-face ´´Block Logo” phaser. Plus, the EVH 90 sports the greatest graphics in the history of rock: the red, white, and black stripes from Eddie’s legendary Frankenstein guitar. Oh yeah—it’s also got a bitchin’ new blue LED. Now, how cool is that?
Issued in London in 1917, the Balfour Declaration was one of the key documents of the 20th century. It committed Britain to supporting the establishment in Palestine of ´´a National Home for the Jewish people´´, and its reverberations continue to be felt to this day. Now the entire fascinating story of the document is revealed in this impressive work of modern history. With new material retrieved from historical archives, scholar Jonathan Schneer recounts in dramatic detail the public and private battles in the early 1900s for a small strip of land in the Middle East, battles that started when the governing Ottoman Empire took Germany´s side in World War I. The Balfour Declaration paints an indelible picture of how Arab nationalists, backed by Britain, fought for their future as Zionists in England battled diplomatically for influence. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to either side or even to most members of the British government, Prime Minister David Lloyd George was telling Turkey that she could keep her flag flying over the disputed territory if only she would agree to a separate peace. The key players in this watershed moment are rendered here in nuanced and detailed relief: Sharif Hussein, the Arab leader who secretly sought British support; Chaim Weizmann, Zionist hero, the folksmensch who charmed British high society; T. E. Lawrence, the legendary ´´super cerebral´´ British officer who ´´set the desert on fire´´ for the Arabs; Basil Zaharoff, the infamous arms dealer who was Britain´s most important back channel to the Turks; and the other generals and prime ministers, soldiers and negotiators, who shed blood and cut deals to grab or give away the precious land. A book crucial to understanding the Middle East as it is today, The Balfour Declaration is a rich and remarkable achievement, a riveting volume about the ancient faiths and timeless treacheries that continue to drive global events. 1.
