The Jungle Book is a collection of amazing stories written by the famous Rudyard Kipling. The timeless stories enjoyed by both children and adults alike were first published in magazines in 1893-94 and reveal much of Kipling’s India, the country of his birth and where he spent the first six years of his life. The tales in the book are fables where the main characters are animals that teach timeless moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or ´´heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle.´´ Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics and society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned ´man cub´ Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other stories are probably ´´Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, the story of a heroic mongoose, and ´´Tommai of the Elephants”, the tale of a young elephant-handler. Kotick, The White Seal seeking for his people a haven where they would be safe from hunters, has been considered a metaphor for Zionism, then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling´s work, each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verse, and succeeded by another. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charles Minx. Orphaned as a baby, human-boy Mowgli is adopted by wolves, befriended by Baloo the bear, and educated in the wonders and dangers of the Indian jungle. But the adventures of The Jungle Book don´t end with the young man-cub and his unusual new family. Through tales of Kotick the White Seal, Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose, and others, listeners learn about courage and survival, rules and order, principles and morals, coming-of-age, and the thrill of self-discovery. Rudyard Kipling´s fables reflect both his childhood in India and his vivid imagination, while exploring the relationship between civilization and the wild. An effective, sophisticated and accurate piece of timeless narrative, a testimony of the individual truth that is always ingrained within the actual and social facts of history. Between the last days of the ´´Geniul din Carpati,´´ or Nicolae Ceausescu, and the years immediately following his famous execution by firing squad that was shown live on TV (25 December 1998), Romania fell into the uncertainty of a revolution that was never implemented in practice. Reflecting a society split between the desire for freedom and the latent immobility of an entire generation born of the backwardness of the Ceauseschian regime, is Nicu, a teacher living in Bucharest. Within the short span of a few months, Nicu finds himself unemployed and has to face the hardships of a job that is no longer there, money that is scarce, and food that is lacking. Mihail, a preadolescent boy of the underground, lives with his friend Barbie within the sewer system that cuts across the city. Always populated by a young humanity, the sewers of Bucharest form a jungle where the law of the strongest prevails, where one gets high sniffing Aurolac from plastic bags and in order to eat one prostitutes oneself in exchange for a handful of dollars. One day, on the snow-covered meadows of the Tineretului Park, that green space of Bucharest and the invisible wall of partition separating the good neighborhoods from the periphery, Nicu´s and Mihail´s stories cross.

Courage, Winston Churchill explained, is ´´the first of human qualities...because it guarantees all the others.´´ As a naval officer, P.O.W., and one of America´s most admired political leaders, John McCain has seen countless acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. Now, in this inspiring meditation on courage, he shares his most cherished stories of ordinary individuals who have risked everything to defend the people and principles they hold most dear. ´´We are taught to understand, correctly, that courage is not the absence of fear but the capacity for action despite our fears,´´ McCain reminds us, as a way of introducing the stories of figures both famous and obscure that he finds most compelling, from Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to Sgt. Roy Benavidez, who ignored his own well-being to rescue eight of his men from an ambush in the Vietnam jungle; from 1960s civil rights leader John Lewis, who wrote, ´´When I care about something, I´m prepared to take the long, hard road,´´ to Hannah Senesh, who, in protecting her comrades in the Hungarian resistance against Hitler´s SS, chose a martyr´s death over a despot´s mercy. These are some of the examples McCain turns to for inspiration and offers to others to help them summon the resolve to be both good and great. He explains the value of courage in both everyday actions and extraordinary feats. We learn why moral principles and physical courage are often not distinct quantities but two sides of the same coin. Most of all, readers discover how sometimes simply setting the right example can be the ultimate act of courage. Written by one of our most respected public figures; Why Courage Matters is that rare book with a message both timely and timeless. This is a work for anyone seeking to understand how the mystery and gift of courage can empower us and change our lives. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Cashman.
